The release date - for real, this time! - of Cyberpunk 2077 is finally fast approaching, so it makes sense that the developers ramp up the hype in the home stretch. After multiple new videos showing fresh footage in the past few days, today comes a five minute official gameplay trailer!
Being a trailer rather than a demo, there is a lot more editing present here and less raw gameplay - the HUD is cut in most places and we get to see the scripted side of things - but we still see plenty of new and exciting content. There's also an overt Blade Runner reference at 0:27 - I mean, it was inevitable, but we expected something a wee bit more subtle.
The footage includes a very similar sequence of sped-up character creation video we saw in the German TV spot, but in much better quality this time around, and there are a lot of snapshots of conversations with the response UI present, sometimes showing off Life Path responses as well.
One of the most interesting new revelations is an underwater section where V is scuba-diving among the ruins of what looks like a flooded and submerged old town. Nothing about swimming or diving was ever discussed CD Projekt Red up until this point - and really, it's weird how everyone forgot about such a simple and basic mechanic - so this is pretty interesting.
Many characters give the camera a lot of face time, establishing their roles and motivations in brief, but the focus is on gameplay.
In between combat sections that don't really reveal much, the footage we haven't seen before is of the cyberware menu, the shop interface, the perk and attribute interface and a few other menus you'll spend time poring over come December 10.
The trailer makes sure to represent the three main sides of the Cyberpunk 2077 world - the grimy, crime-riddled slums, the bright and bold neon-drenched party life and the cold minimalist corporate world. These three aesthetics are constantly fighting each other for relevance in the visuals, and have been described in detail before.
These five minutes of new footage are perfect for stoking the excitement of the fandom. There isn't much time left until the 10th of December, which is when Cyberpunk 2077 will release worldwide.
